All crime data comes from public records published by police forces and city governments — 53 sources including data.police.uk, NYPD Open Data, LAPD, Canadian and Australian police open data, plus area-level statistics (FBI UCR, Statistics Canada, NSW BOCSAR, VIC CSA). When an area has no official coverage, we say so plainly instead of inventing numbers. Scores update weekly as new data is released.

Guardian Mode features designed for parents (daily reassurance push, trip guardian, AI assistant quota) come with a free trial, then an optional subscription ($4.99/month or $49.99/year) — one subscription covers the bound student-parent pair.
Exclusively from public official sources: data.police.uk for the UK (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), open-data portals of US city police departments such as NYPD and LAPD, Canadian city police (Toronto, Montréal, Edmonton), Queensland Police in Australia, and area-level official statistics (FBI UCR agency data, Statistics Canada, NSW BOCSAR, VIC CSA, German BKA PKS district-level tables, French Interior Ministry SSMSI commune-level tables, Tokyo Metropolitan Police ward-level tables, Korean National Police Agency province-level tables) where point-level records aren't published. Each record keeps its original category; we normalise severity into three levels (violent / property / minor) using transparent rules you can inspect in the app.
UK police data is published monthly (usually the first week for the prior month); US, Canadian and Australian sources publish on monthly, quarterly or annual cycles. We import new releases nightly and recompute safety scores weekly. Safety-news briefs from police and news RSS feeds refresh continuously.
No. Location sharing happens only when the student actively enables Trip Guardian, requires explicit consent each time (we log the consent), reports roughly once per hour to save battery, displays coordinates rounded to ~100 m precision, and auto-deletes after 30 days. Outside guardian features, no GPS is collected or stored at all.
We cover universities whose campuses fall inside an official data source's coverage area. Where local police publish no suitable open data (for example Scotland, or some smaller US cities), we mark those universities as "no official data" rather than estimating. Coverage grows as new sources are added.
